What are we?

We are a Down syndrome organization with a primary focus of fostering a love of reading in individuals with Down syndrome.

What is Down syndrome?

Down syndrome is a condition caused by an extra chromosome on the 21st pair of chromosomes in every cell of the individual. It occurs in approximately 1 in 700 babies per year in the United States, and this small addition to the genetic material of the individual causes a distinct set of characteristics. These traits may include, but are not limited to shorter stature, low muscle tone, upward slanting eyes, developmental delays and mild to moderate cognitive delays (NDSS).

Down Syndrome Today

T oday’s medical gains have increased the life expectancy for an individual with Down syndrome to 60 years of age as compared to the average age of 25 years in 1983. With these longer years of life and a more welcoming society, these individuals are achieving goals and success that many thought would never be possible. They are attending college, owning businesses, getting married and living independently.
